expansion of property tax credits

The growing nationwide revolt against property taxes has spread to Connecticut, with Republican lawmakers proposing the largest expansion of property tax credits in the state’s history.
Fox61.com reports Connecticut House Republicans are seeking to increase the maximum property credit from $300 to $1,000 and set a minimum credit of $400 for eligible filers.
The GOP proposal would also increase income eligibility thresholds by about $20,000 for single filers and $30,000 for joint filers. The proposal would strongly benefit joint filers by raising the eligibility threshold from $130,500 to $200,000, the lawmakers added, noting their proposal would increase eligibility for more tax relief to over 800,000 residents.
“Property taxes driven by revaluation are crushing Connecticut’s middle class, yet our Democratic colleagues ignore this crisis while pushing policies that increase costs; from higher electric bills to unfunded mandates that drive up local taxes,” said House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora, who also observed the proposal could be financed with $1.9 billion in volatile revenue that the state treasurer has yet to transfer into Connecticut’s $4.3 billion Rainy Day Fund.
Whether this proposal gains traction remains to be seen. Connecticut’s state government is dominated by Democrats, and Gov. Ned Lamont has yet to comment on the GOP proposal.
